#7: Indulge Thyself

The Challenge: Spend 15 – 30 minutes doing something you love that you don’t often have the chance to do.

Kim:
Today was one of those days that was jammed-packed from start to finish. Everything was on a schedule. There was not much wiggle room for doing things I love to do. However Jason and I did have about 45 minutes to kill before our event this evening, so we went walking in this quaint downtown area of our destination and spent about 25 minutes in a local mom and pop bookstore. Instead of going to business books or even self-help books (which often feels like work), I picked up a book on fashion. I enjoyed sitting there reading about different clothes that my ‘body-type’ should and should not wear. I love just sitting in bookstores and picking up fun books. Too often I read for work, not fun. Why? Because it’s more productive, This challenge helped me to realize that I don’t always have to be doing something productive.

Jason:
boba_fett_sketch.jpg I am an artist, and I love what I do. But it’s been a while since I’ve drawn just for fun.

I used to do it all the time, of course. Recently I’ve looked back at some of my old artwork. I used to do a more portrait work and montages. I look back fondly at my time in school when I spent a lot of time experimenting with different media and subject matter. I’ve been looking forward to a day when I would get back into doing art for art’s sake, almost like a hobby.

So today, even though I’m in San Francisco, miles away from my trusty art supplies, all I needed was a pencil and a complimentary Wingate Inn paper pad to sketch Boba Fett. It was fun, relaxing, and stress relieving. Imagine that.

  1. This afternoon I was off so I decided to figure out a material list for the entertainment center I’ll be building for Katie and Doug. So I figured it all out and called my boss to have it delivered and when they delivered the plywood I realized I ordered the wrong stuff! Glad you don’t run a lumberyard Walt! I had them ship it back and this time I ordered birch plywood good on 2 sides. A little more money but then I remembered 40 years ago how my dad would make birch cabinets for people. He was a carpenter. And I remember helping him hold the plywood as it came out of the table saw. I loved the smell of birch being cut. I can almost smell it now and I can’t wait to get started!
Later I plan on spending some time on my N gauge layout still in progress thank You!

  2. I’m always listening to music, but always while doing something else, whether it’s walking to and from work, or working on the computer, or actually practicing music – there’s never a chance to just concentrate on the music itself without something else occupying me.

Well, today I decided to grab a few snacks, get comfortable, put on a few CDs and just listen to music for its own sake. I thoroughly recommend it as it’s very therapeutic.

  3. Tonight instead of popping in a movie or spending the night watching tv, we got some reading material and just enjoyed each other’s company without any distractions. It was a nice night.

  4. Maybe I’m trying too hard to be Super Escapee or something, but this challenged stumped me. Completely. Perhaps some soul searching is in order? Ah, what an x-blog can do!

  5. Oh, and Jason, that is a really sweet picture of Boba Fett.

The fact that out of everything you could possibly have chosen to draw, you chose Boba Fett, got you my vote.
Actually you had it as soon as I saw the picture, I hadn’t even read the post yet 🙂

  6. Tonight I indulged myself by spending time doing “Search-a-Word” puzzles. My grandfather used to do them all the time. I can remember as a little girl sitting on his lap “helping” find words – even when I just knew my letters. I learned several tricks from Grandpa Regis and they all came back as I was searching tonight – such fun and a great memory!

  7. I spent some time curled on the couch in my jammies, with a warm blanket and my teddy bear….not “doing” anything specific, just relaxing – something I don’t often “let” myself do!

  8. I was a day late on this one, but I put new songs on my ipod shuffle, aka iHappy, and tuned out the rest of the world. I didn’t open my computer at the same time or try to do anything else – just enjoy the music. Ahh – that was nice!

  9. OK, yesterday I really wanted to go play on the swings at the park near my house, but the frigid weather kept me from that so I thought of something indoors that I haven’t done since I was like, 25 — spinning. I spun around in circles in my living room with my arms spread wide and then I’d lie on the ground and enjoy the spins.

Only problem: 15 minutes is a really long time to spin!

  10. I’m currently remodeling my house. It envolves the entire basement and all but two rooms on the main floor. I am a pretty tough task master and don’t take much day – time off. To top it off it snowed last night and so I had to shovel the walks on top of my other endless tasks. I read this assignment and thought I’d put it off for a day. Just too much to do.

My daughter, son-in-law and grandkids live right through my back fence. While shoveling the walks I always clean a path through the back yards to their house. While doing this I got caught by Megan,4 and Jeff 6. They promptly invited me in to play Old Maid with them. At first I told them no, I was too busy. Then I remembered today’s assignment. There is nothing I love more than playing with those two dear children. So I put down my shovel and went inside. I wound up with the Old Maid twice and so, lost both times, but I had the best time!

Thanks for helping me with my priorities!

  11. Swimming! I’ve loved the water since I was a little kid. When I was young and we went to the beach, my mom had to drag me out of the ocean. I’d stay in there until my lips turned blue and I was as pruned as a prune. I don’t get to swim as much anymore because of the lack of places to swim. Recently, a colleague told me about the YMCA, which is across the street from work. Finally, a gym with a pool! (I’ve been waiting for this for ages!) So I signed up today and swam my heart out. 🙂
