And then you’ll be asked five minutes later, “Now? Is it ‘soon’ yet?” After the child catches on that “soon” means “possibly never” the child will lead the way with the ultimate solution: “No, not soon – NOW!” Whether spoken as demand, plea, or a roll-of-the-eyes-shake-of-the-head instruction to the addled adult, children GET IT – There IS NO “later.”

Instead, we should follow Nike’s slogan – Just Do It. Maybe doing it means starting right now. Maybe it means saying I will start next week Friday, and here’s what I need to do to get ready. But, if it’s something important to us, the Nike slogan sure beat “soon” or “next year”. This is good stuff to ponder (now).
