Great insights, Eric. I too have found that the more artists I “steal” from, the more original my own style has become. And stretching yourself to add more tools is always worth the effort!

Great artists steal.” So in my day to day work as a web designer I “Steal” ideas and code from others works and then apply my skills to make it unique. I have found that by forcing myself to understand the works of others I developed the knowledge required to go beyond what has been done previously. At some point I was able to create my own vision and style.

Another thought, Build a creative toolbox. Adding tools to the tool box lets you do more work in different ways. If all you have is a hammer, pounding in screws can be difficult. Add a screwdriver and you have a much more efficient method for inserting screws. Add a power drill and any screw will go in effortlessly, but might be overkill in some instances (like putting in screws for a light switch). By having a variety of tools and knowing how and when to use them we can be more efficient and creative in our process.
