Love it, Kim. That question is at the core of empathy, isn’t it? Love that you were able to personally experience the power, love and release of being asked that question, too.

Segura?” (Nothing else? Are you sure? in Spanish) and it felt good to be heard and taken care of, and my two deliveries with him were natural and excellent experiences, but I just had a nurse in our local Child Development Center ask me “Qué te preocupa Mamá?” (literally: What worries you Mom? i.e., What is on your mind Mom?) and Oh! the difference! Maybe it is a female kinship or affinity, can’t explain!

This is something I always really appreciated about midwife appointments. My wife ended up getting transported, at the suggestion of the midwife, and having a c-section after a long labour; but we were still so glad we had the previous months’ prenatal care instead of the kind of appointments you get with an OB (something I had experienced with my ex-wife). And in contrast to the experience Katie had with her midwife, ours stuck around, came back for postnatal baby checkups, etc.

We tried with our first and found out later she wasn’t as “helpful” as I’d have hoped, after it just not working in our favor and an emergency c-section she had never even bothered to check back in with us after she had to leave the hospital room when she went in with us when we started to have disturbing problems. Cherish it, talk for hours with her – it’s what she’s there for and no matter how much a baby tummy bothers you do a cast, pictures or a mold of some sort. Now that I’ve had my two and am sure I won’t be doing it again (unless insane baby wants happen) I wished I wouldn’t have been so embarassed by my tummy and had the memories of it all in photos.
