Our recent day in Miami reminded me, once again, that life is more about the journey than the destination. I was very excited about visiting Miami. Jason and I are big fans of CSI Miami and have enjoyed seeing some previews of the city from the show. (We are huge “H” fans! Fellow “H” fans will appreciate this picture.)
The plan was to drive from West Palm Beach to Miami taking the A1A Hwy. From the map, it seemed as if this would be a pretty drive, as it’s right along the Atlantic coast. Thinking about it, the drive was my favorite part of the whole day. The sky was a beautiful shade of blue with puffy white clouds, the ocean on our left, there was a cool breeze coming in from the sunroof and great music pumping through our iPod. It was great!
When we actually got to Miami we were met with some snafus in our plans due to rain, but we still got a fun taste of the city.
I constantly fall into the trap of focusing on the destination, instead of enjoying the journey in life. Taking the time to stop and notice the joys on the journey is half of the battle. The other thing about the enjoying the journey is the excitement of the anticipation of the destination. Sometimes anticipating can be even better than the reality of what you were anticipating.
I saw this little girl running on the beach the other day. Her destination was the water, with her inner tube under her arm, but she was obviously enjoying running in the sand on a beautiful day. I can only imagine how excited she was to get in the water. The image of this little girl is so symbolic of the balance I am trying to attain. It’s important to run towards your goals with eager anticipation and also to enjoy getting there. It was clear that running through the sand was just as fun as playing in the water.
