An Adultitis Fighter is someone who rallies against rules that don’t exist and engages in ruthless, senseless acts of silliness that undermine Adultitis and its unadventurous version of adulthood. Once a month, we shine a light upon the most remarkable among us, holding them up as a dazzling example of what we should strive for in this epic battle against a formidable enemy.
This month’s worthy recipient of this prestigious honor is Helen Meissner!
In recognition of their efforts, Adultitis Fighters of the Month receive a special mini-canvas hand-painted by Jason, along with a certificate of honor, a sweet patch, and other Adultitis-Fighting tools. We asked Helen some questions about how she fights the Big A and what advice she has for others…
What are some of your favorite ways to fight Adultitis?
I like to do unexpected things to make others laugh, like say something unexpected or break out in song. I love to read children’s books to adults. One of my favorites is I’ll Love You For Forever by Robert Munsch.
Who or what has been the greatest influence in your own fight against Adultitis?
My mom has always done things to fight Adultitis and I learned a lot from her. My friend Sherie is also a co-conspirator as is my husband, Kevin.
What is something you loved doing as a child that you still do in some form today?
Daydream. Often out on a walk, I am riding my all-black horse across the prairie or next to the ocean.
What is your strategy for dealing with people who are obviously infected with Adultitis?
I try to give them grace and extra love. Find their sense of humor and encourage it often.
What advice do you have for someone who is feeling overwhelmed by Adultitis?
Take a deep breath, is it worth all the negative energy it is sucking from you? Find where the light is in the middle of this dark moment. That is why Hope in the Darkness resonated so much with me.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Being an Insider and a member of the Wonder & Whimsy Society pulled me through tough spots in 2020. The knowledge that there was a group of people who could find magic moments in the midst of chaos helped me take the focus off my problems and look at ways to encourage others. The depth of knowledge and creativity in this group helps when you feel dried up.
Congrats to Helen Meissner, February 2021 Adultitis Fighter of the Month. Thank you for making the world more awesome!
