An Adultitis Fighter is someone who rallies against rules that don’t exist and engages in ruthless, senseless acts of silliness that undermine Adultitis and its unadventurous version of adulthood. Once a month, we shine a light upon the most remarkable among us, holding them up as a dazzling example of what we should strive for in this epic battle against a formidable enemy.
This month’s worthy recipient of this prestigious honor is Jennifer Tackett!
In recognition of their efforts, Adultitis Fighters of the Month receive a special mini-canvas hand-painted by Jason, along with a certificate of honor, a sweet patch, and other Adultitis-Fighting tools. We asked Jennifer some questions about how she fights the Big A and what advice she has for others…
What are some of your favorite ways to fight Adultitis?
I love finding ways to connect to my inner child. I think of things I loved as a child to incorporate in my personal life and share in my professional life as an Art Therapist. I believe there is a healing power of taking care of your inner child. I will never and hope to never fully grow up!
Who or what has been the greatest influence in your own fight against Adultitis?
My maternal grandparents told me to never give up on my artistic side. I took that to heart. I think owning your uniqueness is a strength. It has been a journey and process to get there but I love it.
What is something you loved doing as a child that you still do in some form today?
Of course, art but there are more things. I loved going to the lake as a kid with my parents and extended family. The smell of the bonfire, making s’mores and campfire goodies, takes me right back to my childhood. One of the first things we did was put a fire pit in the backyard at our current house. I love sharing this with our daughter, Riley.
What is your strategy for dealing with people who are obviously infected with Adultitis?
First, I try to slow down and listen. Everyone has a story of how Adultitis takes over at times. Patience and grace comes into play as well. I try to find something in their story to connect back to their inner child. For example, if I know their love from listening, bring something connected to that to make their day. It can be something small to help to know they were heard.
What advice do you have for someone who is feeling overwhelmed by Adultitis?
Baby steps. Change and healing takes time. We did not get here just yesterday. Celebrate and advocate for yourself. You deserve it.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Find something that makes you smile. Give yourself patience and grace. You have a story too. Take time to play today, even if it is just for a few moments. Good vibes to all. Peace, love, and happy trees.
Congrats to Jennifer, February 2022 Adultitis Fighter of the Month. Thank you for making the world more awesome!
