An Adultitis Fighter is someone who rallies against rules that don’t exist and engages in ruthless, senseless acts of silliness that undermine Adultitis and its unadventurous version of adulthood. Once a month, we shine a light upon the most remarkable among us, holding them up as a dazzling example of what we should strive for in this epic battle against a formidable enemy.
This month’s worthy recipient of this prestigious honor is Joy Almond!
In recognition of their efforts, Adultitis Fighters of the Month receive a special mini-canvas hand-painted by Jason, along with a certificate of honor, a sweet patch, and other Adultitis-Fighting tools. We asked Joy some questions about how she fights the Big A and what advice she has for others…
What are some of your favorite ways to fight Adultitis?
Getting outside with my camera is my favorite way to fight Adultitis lately. I love to just look at the things around me and take some fun photos. I also love a good book, music, or trying a new restaurant. My clients love to help me with the restaurants and getting to take them to lunch is a great way to fight the daily Adultitis of work life. This week we are going for Peruvian food and I am super excited.
Who or what has been the greatest influence in your own fight against Adultitis?
Wonder & Whimsy Society has been my greatest influencer and I look forward to focusing more on the challenges in the mail and the calendar to bring more into the daily routine. My daughter has been doing things lately like setting up board games or making Boba tea runs.
What is something you loved doing as a child that you still do in some form today?
Reading and cooking. Both bring me happiness and nothing beats some dragons in a faraway land or a new recipe to bring some excitement back to dinnertime.
What is your strategy for dealing with people who are obviously infected with Adultitis?
I try to do something that will get people to smile or just pray for them because everyone has struggles and praying is something we can do for anyone at any time.
What advice do you have for someone who is feeling overwhelmed by Adultitis?
I think I could use some of that advice right now as December has been rough but again I have been praying and constantly reminding myself that this too will be a molehill in the rearview mirror. Sometimes you need to just use the grocery store pick-up option to make space for something fun to help fight off the Adultitis. Today we ordered our groceries and picked them up after a long hike as a family with the dog. Find ways to make some space in your life whether it be grocery pick-up, taking your backlog of magazines with you to a pedicure to have time to read them, or listening to a new audiobook in the car on your drive to work instead of the radio or news. We love Tamora Pierce’s books because they are read by a full cast.
Anything else you’d like to share?
We are all in different seasons of our lives and have to find the thing that works best for us. Give yourself, your family and your kids grace as we are all struggling in some capacity with all the Adultitis in the world. Sometimes turning on the “Disney” or “Happy” station on Pandora and singing your heart out while cooking dinner is enough to add some sunshine to your day. If you are overwhelmed, reach out to a friend or counselor and ask for help. Please know that a whole family of Adultitis Fighters care about you. And all you lovely people living in the colder part of the country ever need to thaw I always have a guest room ready and waiting 😎
Congrats to Joy, December 2022 Adultitis Fighter of the Month. Thank you for making the world more awesome!
