An Adultitis Fighter is someone who rallies against rules that don’t exist and engages in ruthless, senseless acts of silliness that undermine Adultitis and its unadventurous version of adulthood. Once a month, we shine a light upon the most remarkable among us, holding them up as a dazzling example of what we should strive for in this epic battle against a formidable enemy.
This month’s worthy recipient of this prestigious honor is Ann Vogl!
In recognition of their efforts, Adultitis Fighters of the Month receive a special limited edition print created by Jason, along with a certificate of honor, a sweet patch, and other Adultitis-Fighting tools. We asked Ann some questions about how she fights the Big A and what advice she has for others…
What are some of your favorite ways to fight Adultitis?
I think taking photos is my favorite way to fight Adultitis because it allows one to look at things a bit differently. Also to look for the awe and beauty that surrounds me. Dressing up in a costume makes me smile and usually makes others smile. Sometimes just playing upbeat music and dancing wildly makes life better.
Who or what has been the greatest influence in your own fight against Adultitis?
Definitely Jason and Kim. Jason came to UW-Stout during professional development week and I was hooked. My Aunt Mary K. was very good at being silly and doing fun things as well.
What is something you loved doing as a child that you still do in some form today?
I have always enjoyed being outside: hiking, biking, swimming. And there is something freeing about floating on a lake looking up at the blue sky and clouds.
What is your strategy for dealing with people who are obviously infected with Adultitis?
Smile and sometimes you just have to run away… And sometimes you need to get a group to do something silly to break the cycle. I won the library’s service award one year during COVID so we couldn’t do the normal party. So I said I wanted to do dinosaur races and it happened. Everyone got to pick a wind-up dinosaur and we set up a finish line on each end of a bookshelf and the dinosaurs raced. People had so much fun. Tip: the hopping dinosaur with wings is a ringer so pick it first.
What advice do you have for someone who is feeling overwhelmed by Adultitis?
This is a tough one because as a small business owner, it is easy to get overwhelmed. The Wonder & Whimsy Society has been helpful with the Secret Mission challenges and Mastermind Meetings. Pull out your magic wand and use it or put on that tiara and wash the dishes or do the laundry. No one has to see you, but you’ll know you’ve taken a step.
Anything else you’d like to share before the orchestra begins playing?
Anything else you’d like to share before the orchestra begins playing? Thanks for all the fun ideas. I’m doing my best to make my bookstore whimsical.
Congrats to Ann, December 2023 Adultitis Fighter of the Month. Thank you for making the world more awesome!
