As an adult who tries very hard to conquer Adultitis, I often have fuzzy memories of my childhood. Ever get into a conversation with someone where you try to describe something in your past as “you know, that thing with the thing”? It’s often futile but sometimes you just can’t let it go until its figured out. Perhaps the chalkboard could serve as a medium (think “Magic Screen”) for connecting people’s fuzzy memories and solving these deeply-seeded mysteries! For inspiration, I’d like to refer you to my friend and mentor, Jack Handy:

Hi Kim and Jason,
I purchased your book 2 months ago online. I have had so much fun facing each of the 40 challenges. I’m a grandma (a young one) and mom of 6, I’m also a foster mom. When I was younger I had lots of fun with my now big kids. I have found myself getting ever more serious. I have an adopted 4 yr. old who was seeing a more serious mom. Soooo…I have allowed your challenges to bring back my youth : ) I decided early on that I would NOT do the challenges in order. I would do them as time allowed and not feel pressured to do a specific challenge on a specific day. This way I could add some thought and fun. I had a blast…I believe that my family enjoyed it too. Here are a few of the things that I did…
1. For the challenge of “Do something that your parents would not let you do when you were growing up”
I thought…staying out late or not eating my vegetables was not “big” enough to fulfill my challenge as I could do this anytime. I even asked my Mom for some ideas…she didn’t have any : )
Well when we (my husband and I) were dating he restored a 68 mustang. He decided that he wanted a truck and he was going to sell the mustang. He was willing to give it to me. My parents would have nothing to do with that. He offered to sell it to me. They absolutely refused to let me buy it. Last month while we were “Just looking” at cars on ebay. I saw and purchased a 1968 mustang identical to the one that my husband owned in the early 80’s. We are going to restore it together and have fun taking it out on “dates”.
For the “do something that is uncharacteristic for your age” challenge…I borrowed my 4 year olds smiley face ponytail balls and wore my hair in pigtails all day. When Lillie (the little one who donated the balls) saw me she fell on the floor laughing very hard. It made her day.
For the “do something nice for someone you don’t know challenge” The fulfillment to this challenge happened quite unexpectedly as I was doing the “do something you’ve never done before”…My husband and I had to go to the pharmacy to pick up our daughters prescription. It was a beautiful evening so we decided to take the Harley. When we got to the pharmacy I realized that I had never been thru a drive-thru on a motorcycle. With some protest, I persuaded my husband to do it. We waited in a long line, (I must put in here that we watched a beautiful sunset) just to fulfill this challenge. He hates waiting. But while in line, I heard the lady in line in front of me explain to the young lady at the window that she did not have enough money to buy all 3 of her meds. That she needed to decided which of them was most important. I overheard the names of the meds and recognized them as heart medication. My dad had a bad heart and took some of the same meds. I would have not heard this conversation if I had been in a car and if my husband had not been impatient and turned the bike off. Anyway, I walked up to the window and offered to pay for her meds. At first she declined, but I insisted. She smiled at me and said that I must be an angel. I assured her that my parents would most likely dispute her on that one : ) She thanked me and said “God Bless you”. I replied ” He already has”.
I love doing your challenges…they have brought “fresh life” to my home. As soon as I am finish all 40, I’m gonna start over again and continue this throughout my life…Blessings Jason and Kim and Lucy. I hope to meet you one day : )

Yes Jason those Sunday family dinners did exist (a long time ago late ’60’s – 70’s). When I was a kid we went to my grandmother’s farm almost every Sunday for dinner. She always made an apple pie as it was my father’s favorite. When she was older and in a small appartment we reversed the trend and she came to our house every Sunday. But even then she made and brought an apple pie. After dinner we sat around and watched football or whatever was on the 4 channels we had (B&W until about 1968). Those were great times with family. Today I do spend Sunday with my wife and almost 6 year old son. The only thing planned is going to church and after that we just wing it.

The new set is splendiferous!
I have a couple ideas of something you could do with the chalkboard…
– Joke of the Week. This could be a knock knock joke or any other kind. One fun idea might be writing a riddle up there and revealing the answer at the end of the show…kinda like what you used to do in the podcasts with trivia.
– Picture Contest. Have people send in pictures of when they were little and post one up on the board every week…sorta like the contest in the Lemonade Stand.
– Word of the Week. Write a big word on the board and define it in the show…and try to incorporate it somewhere in the show. That’s similar to one of the EA challenges, if I remember right.
– Simple Recipe of the Week. Write a recipe up there that’s really short, easy to make, and childlike. Then maybe you can also type it up and put it in the show notes.

My suggestion for the chalkboard is to use it as a prop. Jason would draw a hat of some sort around whomever is sitting in that spot. So Kim could have a princess crown or Jason could be wearing a baseball hat, each week it would be different.
Second idea, use it to draw pictures, like the Magna Doodle that was on the back of Joey’s apartment in Friends…
You could draw something from a place you just visited or a place you are going to be speaking at and it would be like a little clue (like Carmen Sandiego.
Nice set!

K & J,
Love the new set. I am glad you guys got all moved in okay. I like Steven’s idea about the riddle or big word. That would be awesome and totally fun.
I have an idea for a poll on one of your EA shows. Should Cubby fly jets or helicopters? I was pretty dead-set on helicopters but because I am such an awesome pilot ;), I may be forced into TACAIR, which is navy speak for fighter pilot. Hopefully I will have some input on the decision so I would like some opinions of other people. Military of flight experience would not be required.
Taking back Sunday is an excellent idea. Usually after our weekly church potluck, we come home and veg out at home and wing it. It is definately good medicine to unbusify your family (unbusify is an actual word in my own personal dictionary and you can use it on the chalk board).
Talk to you guys later,
Cubby
p.s. I am glad your star (Lucy, not Doug) made it back onto the show.

Hi! I must admit, I haven’t finished watching this show yet – I got interupted several times (go figure, with a 2 & 1-yr-old…I’ll catch it during the next nap hour)……anywho, Lucy’s smash-a-licious! Soooo cute! For the chalkboard, I love the above poster’s suggestions….but don’t forget a random photo of Dwight Schrute, as well! ;-) (to reference when discussing someone with severe Adultitis) Love you guys!

p.s. Go Debbie! (poster above who’s doing the 40 challenges) That’s AWESOME!

Great show! Not only do I enjoy it, but I learn a lot
about life and fun. Lucy is so good during your taping.
She is getting used to the camera! I would like to see the chalkboard used for various purposes. One might be to have your delightful comic strip on it, another might be to showcase the Tip for the week and a hint written on it for the next week’s show. Take care and thanks…..Cindi
Ellen says
You could do a different drawing every week that has to do with whatever you are talking about. You could also draw someone from the comic strip. Thanks!

Ok as far as the chalkboard – I think something like a weather map or maybe one of those maps they use to predict the Electoral College for the presidential election. However, it needs to be some of Jason’s artwork. We do not see enough of that anymore. New idea do a “whether” map to indicate some of your surveys but still include some of your artwork.
God bless Dennis from MN

Kim,
Can I buy a Strawberry Shortcake shirt in your store? It took me a minute to figure out what was on your shirt–love it! Let me say I hated Barbies, but loved Strawberry Shortcake.

How about using the chalkboard to post a new idea/challenge each week that can help viewers in their continued battle against Adultitis…
Such as example…
Visit the Zoo…with or without KIDS
then comic a picture of an adult at the ZOO.
Get my idea? Hope so.
