Happy B-day, Kim& Jason!
I enjoyed your “There is an adult in my soup” poem, too. After reading that, I decided to redecorate my living room. I want it like a playroom, with pop color toys around. (I like what I see in your videos.)
Thank you for being the inspiration that you are.

Sounds cool, Akemi — we’d love to see pictures of how the redecoration went!

So funny that you would say to bring a pinata to a birthday party…I just turned 30 this last spring and was feeling kind of mopey because it seemed like no one was planning anything and the stuff that was getting planned kept falling a part. I was turning 30 for Pete’s sake, and I wanted a party… :) Turns out my sister was planning a surprise party for me! It was great! And she even made a pinata…in the likeness of my face…well, as likeness as one can get with a large round balloon, newspaper and streamers. It was pretty hilarious! She and a friend of ours filled it with candy and shredded paper so that when it was broken it looked like it was not only raining candy, but it almost looked like snow. The funniest bit of it all was she had come over to hang out with my at my place before (so that I didn’t show up early to my parents, where the party was) and as we walked up to the house and the pinata was hanging in the front entry way she made some comment like “what in the world is that? oh, I bet it was dad trying to decorate for your birthday…” Ha!
It was a great birthday and that pinata made it all the more memorable!
One funny thing to do with a pinata that we learned in Mexico is when you hang it up don’t leave it stationary. Hang the rope over a tree branch and pull up on rope just when the person swings. It’s pretty funny to watch people swing and just miss because you pulled it away. It makes the pinata last much longer and the laugh factor is that much greater. (Not necessarily the best idea to do with kids…as they just want the candy…but with adults…oh so much fun…one guy even turned into a ninja trying to hit it…I just about wet myself laughing so hard because he thought he could “beat” it! HA!)

Linsey, good tip on moving the pinata for extra laughs. What you DIDN’T see was all the footage that ended up on the cutting room floor of us swinging and missing over and over again. I, more than anyone, had enough trouble and provided more than my share of laughs with the pinata in a stationary position. We’re it moving, I think I’d still be there…

Yay Cubby!!! So exciting!
We went to National Night Out the other night, and there was an airlift helicopter there…I thought of Cubby. I also learned some valuable information from wise sages in and near the helicopter. (Those who follow me on Twitter may already know this.) A 4-year-old girl was exploring the helicopter, and she told the nurse who had come in the helicopter, “Someday, I’m gonna go up and go to heaven.” (It almost sounded like she was expecting to go there in a helicopter.) A boy who was about twice her age, maybe a bit more, was standing nearby, and I overheard him discussing the things that airlift helicopters do. One thing is water rescues. He commented, “One time, I drowned in water.” Someone then pointed out that if he had drowned, he wouldn’t be here. I guess he resurrected?
I surprised my parents with a birthday present tonight. It was especially surprising to them because neither of them has a birthday this month. That was fun!
Probably one of my most memorable birthday parties was my 7th. I was in 2nd grade, and I came down with a fever during the school day. My mom, who taught kindergarten at the time, visited me in the nurse’s office, and I was not doing well at all. After school, we loaded the car with all my friends (this was before the days of seatbelts…well, some cars had seatbelts), and we went home for my birthday party. I went to bed while all my friends played games. Someone came in and woke me up so I could do the birthday cake and presents. Not the most fun birthday I’ve ever had, but definitely memorable.
Then there was my 18th birthday… it was approaching, and I started talking to my parents about plans for a party. I was getting worried because nothing seemed to be happening. I pestered them about it so much that they finally told me they were planning a surprise party, to get me off their back. I called my brother to invite him, and after a long pause, he told me he already had plans. I told him that was fine. When the day of the party came, I went outside to wait for a friend who hadn’t been to our house before, to make sure he found us. When he arrived, we went in, and I was dumbfounded to find the house all decorated…and my brother’s plans turned out to be coming to my birthday party! They still made it a surprise for me, even after telling me. They just told me enough ahead of time to get me off their back. :-) That was fun. Oh, and I haven’t talked to them since about birthday party plans. I learned my lesson.

Correction…that was my 8th birthday, not 7th

The whole year I before I turned 50, I told everyone I knew that they were invited to my surprise birthday party. They asked when it was and I’d say, “I don’t know – it’s a surprise.” Well, my birthday is often over Labor Day week-end. That year it was actually on Labor Day. I thought Saturday would be a great day to have a “surprise” birthday party. Came and went – no party. Well, Sunday would be a fun day to have a “surprise” birthday party also. Came and went – no party. On the actual day, I was pretty p o’d at my two adult daughters and pretty much not talking to them. They both got up, said Happy Birthday and went on with their day (even left me at home while they went about their business). I was on the phone with a friend complaining about my ungrateful kids and she cut me short and said she had some place to get to. Even my friends had deserted me. Hadn’t heard from my brother/sisters that day either. My youngest came home from “shopping” and said she wanted me to go to East Towne with her to see something she wanted to buy. (self-centered person) So I thought, “What do I have to lose? Maybe she’ll buy me an ice cream cone on the way back – fat chance but one can dream” As we were driving out of the driveway she said she had been down by the Dream Park and wanted to know if we had time to drive down there so she could show me something she had found. What the heck else did I have to do with my time except pout??
We drove up to the Dream Park shelter and I said to her, “Gee that looks like your dad grilling in the shelter.” She said, “Yeah, it does, doesn’t it?” Then I said, that looks like Joan walking towards us. She said, “Yeah, it does, doesn’t it?” Then more and more people that “looked like” others of my family and friends started appearing. It actually took until I got to the shelter for me to realize that about 50 people (including the friend who cut me off on the phone) were waiting for me at my “surprise birthday party.”
Awesome time, awesome kids, awesome friends and family. Since then I have lost both of my sisters to cancer. It made me so appreciative of what I have of value in my life.
Today is our Lucy’s 6th birthday and we had a huge Hawaiian party for her yesterday. My 65th is this Labor Day week-end and I was planning on having another “surprise birthday party” for myself but maybe I’ll wait and see what happens naturally.

Such a cool story, Lynne. Thanks for sharing!
Kim surprised me on my 30th. My brother played the role of decoy. We went out for lunch, and the came back to my apartment to find it jammed with friends and family. Didn’t see it coming. But what a nice feeling to know how much people care about you.
Here’s hoping you have a super-duper 65th!
