Picasso once said…”Bad artists copy. Great artists steal.” So in my day to day work as a web designer I “Steal” ideas and code from others works and then apply my skills to make it unique. I have found that by forcing myself to understand the works of others I developed the knowledge required to go beyond what has been done previously. At some point I was able to create my own vision and style.
Another thought, Build a creative toolbox. Adding tools to the tool box lets you do more work in different ways. If all you have is a hammer, pounding in screws can be difficult. Add a screwdriver and you have a much more efficient method for inserting screws. Add a power drill and any screw will go in effortlessly, but might be overkill in some instances (like putting in screws for a light switch). By having a variety of tools and knowing how and when to use them we can be more efficient and creative in our process.

Great insights, Eric. I too have found that the more artists I “steal” from, the more original my own style has become. And stretching yourself to add more tools is always worth the effort!
