An Adultitis Fighter is someone who rallies against rules that don’t exist and engages in ruthless, senseless acts of silliness that undermine Adultitis and its unadventurous version of adulthood. Once a month, we shine a light upon the most remarkable among us, holding them up as a dazzling example of what we should strive for in this epic battle against a formidable enemy.
This month’s worthy recipient of this prestigious honor is Jane Hassan!
In recognition of their efforts, Adultitis Fighters of the Month receive a special mini-canvas hand-painted by Jason, along with a certificate of honor, a sweet patch, and other Adultitis-Fighting tools. We asked Jane some questions about how she fights the Big A and what advice she has for others…
What are some of your favorite ways to fight Adultitis?
I enjoy playing. I own a toy store, so the opportunities are abundant, however, playing in the store often feels like work. I prefer to play board games, card games, dice games, or even go outside to play … with family.
Who or what has been the greatest influence in your own fight against Adultitis?
This is going to sound corny, but I’m my own inspiration. I’ve always loved to play, and I just never let that go. When life becomes overwhelming and Adultitis is closing in, I’m the first to beg someone to play a game with me.
What is something you loved doing as a child that you still do in some form today?
My best friend and I grew up in a tiny rural neighborhood surrounded by fields. We took thousands of walks up and down our rural road and played in the woods. The smell of “corn growing” or “damp earth” whisks me right back to those days. Now, as an adult, I take those walks with my husband – still up and down a rural road – or we escape to some woods for “therapy.” I appreciated the smells of my youth, and I still seek them out today.
What is your strategy for dealing with people who are obviously infected with Adultitis?
I’m still learning how to deal with those weirdos! LOL! (Wink wink.) I honestly don’t deal well with them and can take all the tips you’ve got.
What advice do you have for someone who is feeling overwhelmed by Adultitis?
Take some time to reflect on your favorite memories from childhood and try to recreate those either for yourself or for a younger person. Bringing back those joyful experiences gives you the foundational core you need to face real adult responsibilities that can’t be escaped.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I highly suggest visiting a toy store or the store aisle somewhere and buying yourself something fun, just because. A toy, game, puzzle, activity book – whatever. Then allow yourself to soak in the joy of it. Permission granted.
Congrats to Jane, June 2022 Adultitis Fighter of the Month. Thank you for making the world more awesome!
