Did you ever go to summer camp? I had my only summer camp experience when I was in high school. Other opportunities presented themselves before that, but I was too shy and frankly, chicken, to give them a try. But in high school I went to a week long art camp held at Northern Illinois University, which turned out to be my alma mater. The worst part about it was that it was held during the NBA Finals in which the Chicago Bulls were aiming for their third championship. While they clinched, I was in a hallway making drawings with chalk. But the best part were the friends I met, the things I …

A Match Made in Krypton
Well, I finally did it. I took the "What Superhero Are You?" quiz that Jason shared last month. And it's official. Jason and I were meant to be together. You may remember that he is most like Superman. (He was very excited about this, by the way.) Well, I am most like Supergirl. According to the quiz I am "Lean, muscular and feminine. Honest and a defender of the innocent." …
Make Your Own Treasure Map
Maria Sariego always has interesting things sprinkled throughout her blog. One of the things I picked out from a post back in January that I've been wanting to comment on involves the idea of creating a "treasure map." Basically, it's a big sheet of poster board plastered with images representing some of the things you want to focus on and see manifest in your life. See an example of hers here. …
Can Skunks Blog?
We're about to find out. Stinky has just launched his very own blog. Here's an excerpt from his first post: It feels freeing to have a place to vent my thoughts. Up until now, I’ve been as frustrated as an Ethiopian ice skater waiting for winter. Until you’ve experienced it, you can never fully comprehend the agony of dependency upon on the whim of a four-year-old girl. I’ve been dressed in tutus, framed for crimes I didn’t commit, and hurled down busy streets on a plastic sled cheaper than a broken 8 track player. Should be interesting. The exclusive blog can be …
Trying New Things
Coming from the land of cheese and brats, Jason and I tried to get our fill of real southern-style cooking this weekend in Atlanta. Nothing beats southern fried chicken. I heard once that if you try a food that you're not sure about three times, by the third time you will like it, or at least be able to tolerate it …
Coca-Cola and Liquified Gummi Bears
Today I had an excellent opportunity to exercise some old fashioned childlike curiosity. Kim and I are in Atlanta this weekend for a speaking engagement tomorrow. We arrived this morning and after checking in to the hotel, rode the train into the city. We ended up at the World of Coca-Cola, for an interesting immersion into the storied history of the first truly global brand. With my interest in art and marketing, I enjoyed seeing the timeline of advertisements, but the highlight of the tour is Club Coca-Cola. The "Taste of the States" area offers servings of many of the different soft …

Nice Paper
Vickie Milazzo wrote an interesting article on learning. She outlines 8 ways to learn in a more childlike manner. All of her points are pretty sound, but my favorite snippet is #4: "Be willing to learn from anyone and everyone." Grown-ups seem to have a love affair with paper. Specifically, the fancy paper printed with initials like MBA, PhD, JD, and the like. The kind of paper signed by bigwigs at universities -- the more prestigious, the better. These pieces of paper -- also called certificates and diplomas -- are a great sign of accomplishment, but they can also lead to two …
