Folks in the UK have reinforced my believe that a childlike spirit is something you can carry with you your entire life. Indeed, the moment you set your childlike side on the shelf is the moment Adultitis gets a stranglehold and life starts to suck sour grapes.
Last week, Britain’s first playground for the over-60s set opened in Manchester. Now, when Grandma takes her grandson to the park, all bets are off as to who’ll have the most fun. Instead of things like slides, this playground has equipment specially designed to work the hips, legs, and torso. Besides a great way to stay in shape, the new fitness park also encourages socialization. And fun. Lots and lots of fun.
Residents’ association chairman Joan FitzGerald said: “When we tested it all the people we took in were over 70 and I have never heard so much laughing. I believe you are never too old to play and this also helps keep you fit.”
And an extra cool little touch: there are also engravings of quotes from famous philosophers featured throughout the park. I wonder if this famous philosopher is among them:

First they pick up Wii controllers. Now they build themselves a playground. What do you think? Is this a good trend, or do Grandma and Grandpa need to start “acting their age?”

OF COURSE it’s a good trend! There is a time and place for our elders to “act their age” – when they want to. I’m all for playgrounds and parks and Wii controllers. Now, when will they make a playground for the 40-year-olds??? We need one, too!

I just want to mention that not everyone over 60 is a grandparent. Just because someone is older, don’t assume she’s a “grandma.”
Hi, thought you should know that such “playgrounds for oldies” have been in existence in Hong Kong for a number of years already, built by the government in parks and housing estates all over.
I have not travelled much in China, but I have also come across one in Chengdu.
