Our recent day in Miami reminded me, once again, that life is more about the journey than the destination. I was very excited about visiting Miami. Jason and I are big fans of CSI Miami and have enjoyed seeing some previews of the city from the show. (We are huge “H” fans! Fellow "H" fans will appreciate this picture.) The plan was to drive from West Palm Beach to Miami taking the A1A Hwy. From the map, it seemed as if this would be a pretty drive, as it’s right along the Atlantic coast. Thinking about it, the drive was my favorite part of the whole day. The sky was a beautiful shade of …
Dream Big
Who’s The Idiot in the Rearview Mirror?
Oh, wait, that would be me. Last week I took a day and a half to get away. I ventured west to Milwaukee; just me, myself and I. It was an introvert's dream. I putzed around a few bookstores while drinking caramel apple cider, went on a photo safari downtown (I'll post some photos later), and visited the Eisner Museum of Advertising and Design. The most productive thinking time occurred in my hotel room, a good seven hour chunk of time with pizza and Pepsi at my side. …

The Power of Far-Flung Flourishes
Today I had a chance to have lunch with a good friend. We try to get together every few months or so, and when we do, we're a couple of Chatty Cathys. We finally got up to leave as the dinner crowd started coming in. We're both entrepreneurs at heart, and big dreamers. As we talked about our goals and dreams for the future, I had to laugh as I thought about how detailed we were at times. Ever since I was a little boy, I've had my eye on a certain dream car. I shared with him that just the other day, Kim mentioned -- in complete seriousness -- that we should probably have a detached garage …
In Search For Peace
She’s 39 and a mom of three. Life is busy. Work is challenging. The kids are always on the go. Her husband helps out with household family stuff as much as he can, about as much as she can these days. At the end of the day she is exhausted. She looks forward to the kids going to bed so she can have some peace. Peace doesn’t come easily, though. When she finally sits down on the couch her mind is filled with a list of “to do’s” and demands. She wants to relax. She deserves to relax. It starts with a glass of wine a few nights a week. It’s a small little joy. She soon finds herself drinking a …
I Wish to Meet…
What a great connection. They have both been around for about 25 years. While SportsCenter has managed to change the way people view sports, Make-A-Wish has also been busy bringing hope, strength, and joy to children living with life-threatening medical conditions. You may wonder what one has to do with the other. Well, ESPN is featuring a summer series called 'My Wish,' working collaboratively with the Make-A-Wish Foundation as they chronicle unique sports-related wishes of 10 children. They are sharing the stories of one child each day from July 9th to July 23rd. If you don’t have ESPN or …
18 Checks
I was chatting over e-mail with my Uncle recently (you may have heard his interview in our latest podcast), and the subject of following one's dreams came up. He expressed how sad it is that so many people wait until they retire before they pursue their dreams and goals. Unfortunately for many, he noted, that day never comes. This is coming from a guy in his mid-fifties coming off a quadruple bypass operation. He mentioned that when people actually do retire, the average number of Social Security checks they are able to cash before they die is... eighteen. I'm not sure what his source …

Little Cubs Field
Now here's a story that will warm any baseball fan's -- and especially a Cubs fan's -- heart. I got an e-mail the other day from Dennis Garkey, the president of a non-profit group called Build Little Cubs Field. The aim of the group is to build a wiffleball-sized replica of Wrigley Field in Freeport, Illinois. The project, which has been supported by Ron Santo and the Chicago Cubs, will feature brick walls, the famous ivy (some supplied by the Cubs), the basket over the wall, and even a replica scoreboard. It will be used for Little League (7-8 yr old boys and girls), kickball, wiffleball, …
Michael in MN
Today while in Minneapolis Jason and I had the privilege of meeting a fine young man named Michael. He, too, is a cartoonist and he's also an aspiring actor. Talking with Michael brought a smile to my heart. He reminded me that we can accomplish so much with big dreams, big smiles, and big faith. Thanks, Michael! …
