What Is Your Word for 2010?

When our world officially admits it's another year older, lots of people come up with resolutions. "I resolve to lose 90 pounds." "I resolve to quit smoking once and for all." "I resolve to win the lottery." Considering how many resolutions are upended by the consumption of an entire bag of Doritos in one sitting or how many gyms look like ghost towns on March 1st, it's amazing that we go through the trouble of of making them in the first place. Indeed, the mandate that we should all come up with some sort of New Year's Resolution is a rule that doesn't exist. …

A Very Adultitis Christmas

We hope you and your family are having a wonderful holiday season. It can be the most joyful time of year, unless someone with a serious case of Adultitis shows up. Treatment is available, but awareness is the key. Both Ebeneezer Scrooge and the Grinch were Adultitis survivors, so there is hope. We decided to use this post to highlight a few videos that may be of help. …

61 Ways to Put the Brakes on Holiday Stress

1. Watch a funny Christmas movie. (We recommend Elf, Christmas Vacation, and A Christmas Story.) 2. Get cookies from the best bakery (or friend) in town. 3. Hire a neighbor kid looking for a few bucks to take care of your shoveling. 4. Organize a gift exchange, instead of buying for everyone. 5. Better yet, make it a white elephant gift exchange. 6. Keep up on your sleep and exercise. Quick naps and short walks can do wonders! …

What To Do When You Encounter a Jerkbutt

It seems like every audience I speak to has one. A grumpy dude with his arms folded and a face that looks like it was turned to stone by a quick glance at Medusa. Early in my career, it used to bug the heck out of me. I'd get all self-conscious. I'd wonder: Does he think I'm too young? Does he think my jokes stink? Is he the dude I saw last night on America's Most Wanted? …

Avoiding the Dreaded Title of Bridezilla

If there is anyone who knows a little bit about stress, it's a bride to be. Seriously, they can get downright c r a z y. Which is why we thought it was a wonderful idea to have such a person (a bride to be, not a crazy person) review our new book, There's An Adult In My Soup. Enter Becky Speer, aka Becky Mochaface, whose big day is quickly approaching. Would she actually find some value in it, or toss it aside like a wedding DJ with nothing but Chicken Dance CDs? …

What I Thought About While Shoveling Snow

Today was a snow day. Over a foot of snow. Blizzard conditions. The governor declared a state of emergency and authorities urged people to stay off the roads if at all possible. Since Kim and I both work from home, we were able to stay in and decided to take most of the day off. Sure, we have a lot of stuff on our to-do lists, but days like this don't come around all that often. You have to take advantage of them when they come. But I must confess: I did partake in my share of inner grumbling as I struggled to shovel the driveway and sidewalk. (Ah the joys of home ownership!) The snow …

Watching Angels Dance

Lucy is one year old today. Happy Birthday, Lucy Ruth! She's in that cute stage where she reaches out for things that she wants. Typically, her reach is accompanied by a grunt, as if to say, "gimmie that!" On Sunday morning in church, as I held my bundle of energy (not unlike wrestling a cat), I couldn't help but observe her noticing something. Unlike other parts of the service, she wasn't reaching for the guy's coat in front of us or the bag of mini-marshmallows his four-year-old son was inhaling one by one (which was hilarious, by the way). …
