Why I Hope Things Don’t Get Back to Normal

It seems we are all yearning for a return to normal. I know what people mean when they say it – I say it myself, and what we have, right now, is not normal. But in truth, I really don’t want to return to normal. As we inch slowly closer to a resolution of this crisis, it might be worth asking a question that was posed when the shelter-in-place guidelines began: What is essential? We’ve been given a gift. This pause has been an unprecedented (anyone up for making that the official word of 2020?) opportunity to examine our lives and our society with a new perspective. For example, are all of …

Looking for Answers

This is an adapted excerpt from A Chance of Awesome: How Changing the Way You See Changes Everything, which is currently available as a free download. I made a few tweaks here to address our current situation. I’ve heard that God always answers prayers. Sometimes the answer is no. Sometimes, he says yes in ways that seem like a no. During a family vacation in the Pacific Northwest a few years ago, one of the things I wanted to see was an orca. We heard stories of a mama and her baby being spotted in Puget Sound. We kept our eyes peeled on the ferry ride to Victoria. Our vacation …

Cara Tracy, April 2020 Adultitis Fighter of the Month

An Adultitis Fighter is someone who rallies against rules that don't exist and engages in ruthless, senseless acts of silliness that undermine Adultitis and its unadventurous version of adulthood. Once a month, we shine a light upon the most remarkable among us, holding them up as a dazzling example of what we should strive for in this epic battle against a formidable enemy. Cara Tracy is a ray of sunshine, a light of joy in the world. She embodies whimsy, wonder, and wisdom as she intentionally surrounds herself with tools and practices that bring about peace and playfulness. All of this …

Cool Things Everywhere

One of my favorite parts of being a parent is showing my kids cool things and watching their eyes light up: Let me show you how to make this drawing look even more realistic. Wait 'till you see this tiger up close. You are not going to believe this thing called the ocean. Watch what happens when we heat up these popcorn kernels...Just last week, we watched The Wizard of Oz. My oldest had seen it, but it was brand new to the two littles. What a delight it was to see it through their eyes, with each bend on the yellow brick road leading to something new to marvel at. When we’re young, it’s easy …

Lessons from a Wookie on Dealing with a Crisis

I am a Star Wars nerd. Forgive me for my digression into Star Wars history, but I promise I have a point. When we first see Chewbacca, the Wookie, he is a helper. He is fighting in the Clone Wars and helping Jedi Master Yoda escape from the clone troopers trying to kill him.Somewhere along the way, he gets captured by the Empire and is locked away in a dark and muddy dungeon. His future looks bleak. This is where he meets Han Solo for the first time. He initially sees Han as an adversary, and possibly a meal, as he hadn’t been fed in three days. But as Han struggles desperately for survival, …

Hope Is Never Lost

I just finished up this painting while my family and I continue to practice social distancing, cooped up together at home. Being in the studio has been a wonderful way for me to unplug for a bit and lose myself in act of creation. I have so many ideas bubbling up right now! The original idea for this one has been sitting in my sketchbook for years, inspired by the song "Ghosts That We Knew" by Mumford & Sons. I revisited the idea during this crisis, as it seems to be a perfect message for the time. So give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light'Cause oh that gave me such a …
