My friend and colleague Jill Fleming is a Registered Dietitian and wellness speaker who travels the world encouraging people to make "Love Your Body Choices." She recently shared an article for our soon-to-be-released Escape Adulthood magazine. (It's at the printer!) One of the tips in her article is . . . "Squeeze any muscle you wish to tone. Hold it until it starts to burn and then hold 5-seconds longer." Great tip! It also applies to following your dreams. In order to get to the next level in your goals you have to not only let it burn, you have to persist through the burn. Too many …

Adultitis Antidotes
Kim and I are on a quest to find blogs that we deem to be "Adultitis Antidotes." What exactly IS an Adultitis Antidote, you ask? Well, when it comes to the blogosphere, an Adultitis Antidote is a blog exhibiting a childlike spirit that helps counteract the effects of Adultitis by using honesty, curiosity, passion and playfulness to encourage its readers to delight in the little things, dream big, and stress less. We're currently on the hunt to find the best of the best when it comes to dealing with Adultitis. As of this post, we've already announced a few winners. …
No More Negativity
Continuing my “Beyond the Elementary" series (helping adults move out of childish behaviors, to live more childlike lives with less stress and more success), here's lesson #4... 4. No More Negativity Have you ever met a kid who makes a big deal out of nothing all of the time? This is the kid who gets a papercut and cries uncontrollably until the entire class has seen and heard about it. This is also the kid who interrupts a Dr. Seuss story to tattle on someone- again! There are many reasons why this child insists on being a "handful." Often it's a cry for help, a way to get attention, …
A 9/11 Tradition
Kim has already posted a pretty good take on September 11 and the events that transpired six years ago. (Six years already?!) I'd just like to add a simple question: How has your life changed? Some of us have had friends and family members who have fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. But for many people, the only big change has been the extra security at airports. Other than that, life has settled into the same hurried ruts that were prevalent in pre-9/11 days. …
Living Free
As I sit on my front porch this September 11th I can't help but be in a mood that is equal parts melancholy, nostalgic and inspired. Such a strange combination. Life changed as we know it six years ago. Not only were lives lost, but innocence was stolen. The fight against terror is overwhelming and persistent. We are all so blessed that there are courageous men and women willing to give their lives for our safety. Boy, do we take that for granted. What I find horrific as a sit and reflect is the number of people who were not victims of that awful day, but who are waiting for a tragedy …
Red Ink is Evil
This from Minette, a regular contributor to the discussion on this blog: They are continuing this entire stupid idea of banning all possible hits to self-esteem even in the corporate world. I work for a government agency and we do a lot of training. I’ve been told that I can no longer use red ink to correct my trainees’ work because it would “hurt their self-esteem.” I have to use green ink. I’ve gone ahead and done this like a good little girl but my first reaction was, “Life sometimes sucks. Get over it!” Yet another example of Adultitis running rampant. If red pen hurts your self-esteem, …
Laugh Louder
Fun is contagious. The other day I was reading Everyday Mommy, a very fun and insightful blog by Jules. She posted a hilarious picture of herself which caught my attention. Jules does not take herself too seriously, and I love it! She was proactively fighting her Adultitis by playing with Photo Booth. For those of you not familiar with this software, basically it works with the iSight camera that is build into the screen of the MacBooks and functions just like a photo booth would, giving you a few seconds before it snaps the picture. But wait. There's more... …

Surprised by Slush
by Walt Kotecki When I was younger there was a "fast" food restaurant in our town call Sandy's. One of the drinks they offered was a cherry slush. That was the first time I have ever heard of them and I loved them. Nowadays cherry and a million other flavors are common and I still like them. I don't get cherry like I used to because of all the choices. This summer I have tried a different approach to my slush selection process. Maybe this fits into one of the Escape Plan challenges. The one day when my wife and I were going for one of our evening treats she said that she was …
Is Your Life Insanely Interesting?
Jarkko Laine thinks it should be. He's celebrating an Insanely Interesting September over at his blog and is inviting everyone to share in the fun. Jarkko lives in Finland and is a very curious and refreshing individual. If we had more folks like him walking around, we'd all be better off. (Not in a clone sort of way, but in the way he looks at life sort of way.) Jarkko recently interviewed me and Kim about what children can teach us about leading an insanely interesting life. I hope you find it interesting. …
