Warning sign that you might be taking yourself too seriously (a.k.a. Adultitis Symptom)... there's a cell phone in your ear, but you aren't talking to anyone. Heck, you aren't even expecting a call. Don't get me wrong. I love the idea of hands-free cell phones. They are safe for driving and making typing much more convenient. It makes sense in a lot of situations, but when I see someone out to eat with her husband with a cell phone in her ear, I can't help but wonder. I just hope she's an emergency responder or waiting for a call from her best friend who is about to go into labor. One …
Kim's Random Musings
Second Childhood
The other day in the comments of my post about the Pajama Run (a fun idea about going on spontaneous ice cream runs in your pj's after bedtime), a woman left a heartwarming comment that made me smile. She basically summarized the entire message of Kim & Jason in a few insightful words. TadMack shared, Sometimes stuff like this makes me tearful, and I think, 'Dang! I want a do-over! I didn’t get a childhood like that!'…and then a little light goes on. OH. See you at the ice cream parlor. I’ll be the one with the curlers and the cloud-printed flannels… …
Don’t Stop Playing
We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. - George Bernard Shaw What puts you in a playful mood? Here's a common scenario for us, Jason and I are in the car heading someplace at dinnertime. All I have to say is, "Where do you want to stop and get some food?" Pop. The red hat appears! We laugh that it's there, and I'm convinced I do see it somedays. (He just can't seem to get enough of those roast beef sandwiches!) Have fun playing on this long weekend! Woman vs. Turkey
I love this commercial! In searching for it I realized that Jennie-O has a handful of hilarious ones along the same line. Check them out here, here and here. ENJOY! [tags]Jennie-O commercials, turkey, funny Thanksgiving commercials[/tags] …
Pass the Peace, Please
(Say that five times fast!) We have so many choices on our "menu of life." The freedom we have is such a gift and it's time to order up the best that life has to offer. To be able to do that we have to ask ourselves a very important question... What steals your peace? I caught a minute of author and speaker Joyce Meyer on TV the other day asking that question. She suggested that as soon as you figure out the answer, you can work to proactively avoid those things. …
Fun in the Shadows
Ever make shadow puppets when you were little? As kids, my sisters and I always loved it when our begging would finally pay off and we'd get to have an evening watching our home movies on the old movie projector. (It was a lot of work to set-up, mom assured us.) As dad got the film ready to go, along with that one random hair projecting on the wall, our tiny hands would make all sorts of creations. Butterflies were the easiest. Our speaking programs are filled with visuals, which means that we have an LCD projector and screen set-up at every gig. Inevitably, every intergenerational …
Dennis Miller on Happiness
Whether you agree politically with Dennis Miller or not, you have to admit that he is quite the wordsmith. Everytime I see him on TV, I find my inner voice reminding my consciousness to "pay attention" and "listen closely." Boy, he's a fast talker. It's fun to listen to him! The other night we were flipping channels and caught the end of his interview on The O'Reilly Factor. O'Reilly asked him about his thoughts on Kiefer Sutherland. …
Grandparents Getting Jipped
(Warning: This is a Dr. Phil style rant that I just need to get out.) I feel sorry for grandparents these days. Many are getting jipped out of enjoying their hard-earned role as the "fun adults" in their grandkid's lives. So many grandparents are forced to be very "parental," playing a major role in disciplining their grandkids. This was not the case a few generations ago, when grandparents were allowed to spoil the kids rotten... which is how it should be! Yesterday in church we sat a few rows behind a grandma (about 65) and her five-year-old grandson. The boy's parents were not with …
Wearing Fun
Recently during an Escape Plan TV episode I excitedly purchased a pair of red Chuck Taylor low tops. Love 'em! (Yeah, I know I have BIG feet.) It's just plain fun to wear them. But an unexpected free prize has proven to happen every time I sport these playful sneakers. Inevitably someone comments on them... every time. Perfect strangers are giving me the thumbs up, big cheesy grins, and sharing stories of their favorite pair of Chucks. It's almost like they are partaking in the fun as well. I honestly wasn't expecting this to happen, but it's turned into an insightful social experiment. …
Busy: The New Four Letter Word
Everyone is busy. Enough already. Do you find yourself unknowingly getting thrown into the "busyness" contest? Whether it's at work, with family or acquaintances, people start talking about how busy they are. Before you know it you, too, are spouting how little time you have. For some reason, it seems like the busiest person wins. What a twisted and damaging conversation. I am unofficially making "busy" a bad word, in order to avoid the trap of, not only the aforementioned conversation, but mostly the mentality. It's poisonous. The funny thing is that everyone has the same amount of …
