You’re Not Keeping Up With The Joneses. Or Are You?

It's summer, but I have to keep reminding myself that school is out. Because I don't see any kids. Not during the day, at least. It's eerily quiet. I suppose they are all probably inside playing Wii, or more likely, off at some day care center. It's a shame, if you ask me. For most of the kids in my generation and the ones before, summertime was enjoyed outdoors. At home and around the neighborhood. My brothers and I spent our summer days in and out of the kiddie pool and sandbox (resulting in a wet sandbox and a sandy pool). With a tennis ball, a pitchback, and a few slabs of square …

Five Tips for Phenomenal Photos of Your Kids

Let me begin by saying I am not Ansel Adams. Most of what I know about photography came from an introductory class I took in college. However, that class was part of a bachelor's degree in the fine arts, which gave me me an extensive knowledge of graphic design. Of course, an in-depth familiarity of all your camera's bells and whistles can take your photos to a whole new level. But if you understand a little bit about design, you can make great photographs. You don't have to be employed by Sports Illustrated in order to get great shots of your kids. I believe that every regular Dad has the …

What Watching Fireflies Can Teach You About Your Level of Adultitis

The other night I was sitting in the backyard with my daughter Lucy. We were watching fireflies, aka lightning bugs. I tried catching one so she could see one up close, but chasing down a firefly in the dark with one hand while holding a baby in the other proved trickier than expected. Deciding to just take in the scene, we sat on the deck and watched them go about their evening routine. Questions started popping into my head. What makes them glow? What purpose does the glowing serve, anyway? And where do they go during the day? After putting Lucy to bed, I decided I was going to do a …

There’s An Adult In My Soup

When I was a kid, my soup was just right, Yummy and tasty, a veritable delight. Two cups of dreams and a full pint of play, A pinch of curiosity for the perfect bouquet. Passion and wonder and faith it had too, I’d dare you to taste a happier stew! But when I got older, my soup it did turn, Enough to warrant a cause for concern. It’s gunky and goopy and lacking in fun, It’s not nearly as tasty as when I’d begun. It’s bland and it’s bitter and tastes just like poop, The problem is clearly the adult in my soup! * * * * * * * * * * * * …
