On Darth Vader, Adultitis and Our Wedding Day
Last Friday, Jason and I celebrated 11 years of being Mr. & Mrs. In true "Escape Adulthood" fashion, we played hooky in the afternoon and enjoyed a beautiful spring day in Madison together -- just the two of us. Lunch outside by the lake, a nice stroll down State Street, dreaming together by the water. Our boss didn't even care!! :) It's fun to think back to our wedding day. There were so many amazing little moments that I like to savor. …

Are You Under-Living?
I am someone who loves, values and respects the gift of life. I become deeply angered and saddened by people who treat life as a disposable entity and those who waste their lives under-living in ruts and boredom. As cliche as it sounds, "life IS a gift," and so I have tried to design my own life so that I can live with no regrets -- living each day to the fullest. Sounds nice and tidy and as cheesy as something from an outdated Successories print, I know. And yet, the question, "To what degree do you value your own life?" was asked of me through a whole new lens the other night as we …
Pry Your Life Out of the Jaws of Average
Every once in a while someone pops into my life that just knocks me on my butt for one reason or another. In the midst of this cold and dreary "spring" (aka extended winter), I have been painfully craving the fresh perspective that spring inevitably brings me. From the tulips to the chirping birds, spring is just good for my soul. Since it's been so delayed here in Wisconsin, I have struggled to keep my positive playful perspective, as I tend to rely on the change in seasons for a boost that didn't come through when I thought it would this year. …

90 Candles: A Guide to Making Birthdays More Memorable
Birthdays can be a mixed bag. I know people who look forward to them and find creative ways to notify everyone that their big day is coming up. Then, there are those who clam up and do their best to make sure no one knows they are turning a year older. "It's just another day," they say in their best Eeyore tone. People seem to either LOVE 'em or dread 'em. But dreading your birthday is the epitome of Adultitis, isn't it?! …

Mom Enlists an Army to Clean Her Home for Free
It seems like the "spring cleaning" bug has bitten a number of my friends. Clutter can be a big culprit to Adultitis. With the busy pace of life, piles accumulate and before you know it, you are feeling overwhelmed and unenergized by all of the "stuff" in your life -- whether at work, at home, or in your mind. That's quite a winning combination for the Deadly A. I like the idea of having things all fresh and organized, but I am still waiting for that internal motivation. Once again, one of my sister-in-laws came to the rescue. …

Picnic in the Rain: Father and Son Surprise Mom and Stay Dry
Spring has sprung in the Midwest. Yahoo! The black mounds of snow have finally disappeared and plump robins are taking their place in the yard. Tulips are starting to pop and the days are getting longer. I am a fan of the occasional cozy rainy day, but I can only handle a few of those a week, once I've tasted the long-awaited gift of a sunny spring day. I'm like an anxious 8-year-old on Christmas Eve. Come on spring! I know you need the rain to make everything green and colorful, but I can't wait any longer!! I suspect our friend Steven from Seattle can relate to my impatience. He …

Sister-in-law Inspires Meal Planning Rebellion
My sister-in-law Katie has been implementing a small rebellion successfully and consistently for years. She simply refuses to believe that weeknights have to be stressful. She works outside of the home full-time and is in charge of the cooking for her household. Her weekly rebellion is something simple that helps her de-stress her day-to-day considerably, so that she has more time for the fun stuff in life -- like playing her ukelele and watching her favorite movie, The Little Mermaid. …

What I Learned from Getting My Hair Chopped
I sat in the chair watching 5 inches of my hair hit the ground, and thankfully, I instantly knew I was making the right decision. I wasn't sure earlier that day as we drove there. Was I going to cry? (Yes, that HAS happened to me before -- not a good day.) Change can be exhilarating and terrifying all at the same time. Those two emotions can manifest tears or joyful feelings of freedom. Sometimes you just don't know until you do it. …
