Family Turns Christmas Eve Dinner Into a Barbarian Affair

One of the attendees of last summer's Escape Adulthood Summit was inspired by the Barbarian birthday party we held to celebrate our son Ben turning one. She wanted to have one with her family on Christmas Eve, but she was worried about how it would be received. Unsurprisingly, it would be quite a departure from their normal holiday traditions. Judging by the pictures she sent, it seems like it went over pretty well. (Bonus points for the twisty straw!) Sometimes the biggest hurdle to initiating a Small Rebellion is our own fear. That feeling of dread or uncertainty is Adultitis' last …

23 Super Snowman Building Tips

I put on my snow pants, boots and mittens and scoured the vast wastelands of the Internet to uncover a whole bunch of neat tips for making your next snowman the envy of the neighborhood. Please keep in mind that these tips are for building a traditional snowman, which is typically three snow balls placed on top of each other. If you want to get all crazy and create some elaborate snow sculptures, this is not the post you're looking for. These tips are for those times when you want to roll old school. …

A Post About The Winter Blues (and Ben’s Favorite Ornaments)

For the last week I have felt this unsaid pressure to take down the Christmas tree. It's January 15th, we "should probably" get it all put away. (Hmm, is this a "rule that doesn't exist"?) Here's the dealio... when the tree comes down, I'm afraid that the reality of January floods the house. It's cold. Spring is a LONG ways away. Like, not even in sight. January has the potential to be quite BLAH without the twinkling lights on our beautiful tree. But if I think about it even more honestly, the real reason is not the winter blues. It's this... …

Removable Whimsy for Your Walls

Kim and I are suckers for whimsy. Especially when it comes to home decor. No, seriously. It's true. So it should come as no surprise that we are in love with Blik, a company that makes removable wall decals. It's the coolest way to add a dash of artistic whimsy to a room without having to possess any artistic ability. Wallpaper wishes it could be changed this easily. Talk about an easy way to transform your home or office into an Adultitis Hospital! Here are some of our favorites: …

It’s Always Time To Be Ridiculous

"Watermelon with Mustache" by Jason Kotecki "The right to be ridiculous is something I hold dear." -- U2, I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight I recently became aware of a website called ridiculo.us, an online community dedicated to the encouragement, development, and execution of ridiculous ideas. Their most recent project is to fake a marathon. That's right. On February 2nd, people all over the world (including me and Kim) are going to be taking and sharing pictures of themselves stretching, running, and finishing a marathon. They will be decked out in official race t-shirts and bib …

Happy 40th Jenna!

If you have ever ordered anything from the Kim & Jason Lemonade Stand, chances are quite high that my friend Jenna was the one to lovingly pack it up and send it to you (along with the fun free prizes she adds to each order.) Jenna has been with Kim and I since the beginning of our little business. We met in college and spent many hours dreaming, laughing and serving together. She was one of the people who encouraged me when I was feeling the bug to start drawing comics about two little kids named Kim and Jason. …

Lincoln Log Forest

My favorite segments of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood were when he would do some kind of epic behind-the-scenes factory tour. I remember the crayon factory, the marble factory, and the interview with Lou Ferrigno, aka The Incredible Hulk. Epic, I tell you. I've always been fascinated with where things come from, and perhaps I have Mr. Rogers to thank for that. This painting depicts where Lincoln Logs come from, in case you were wondering. It's a fact, look it up. Lincoln Log Forest by Jason Kotecki …

The Skipper

I'm not sure how I feel about this guy. This video is three decades old, but I know one thing for sure: he has no Adultitis whatsoever, as far as I can tell. His secret? Skipping. "That sensation is absolutely one of the most extraordinarily joyous sensations that a person will ever experience." --Bill Martinelli, The Skipper (now known as Skip Martin) I gotta be honest, even though it's been a while since I've been skipping, it's probably in the top five, for sure. It IS hard not to feel joyous when you are skipping! And I love how he made a business out of skipping. But this is the …

Dream On

Where do dreams come from? Not the kind you have when you’re sleeping, the other kind. The kind you can’t stop thinking about when you’re awake. The kind that get you up in the morning, keep you going when times are tough, and fill you with joy when you think about them actually coming true. I happen to believe that those dreams were baked into us from the beginning. They’re part of our spiritual DNA. We discover them at different points of our lives, but when we do, watch out. Nothing can stop us. Unless we let it. Dreams are powerful things, and Adultitis will stop at nothing to get …
