Thou Shalt Be Realistic
[ This is an excerpt from Penguins Can't Fly +39 Other Rules That Don't Exist, a beautiful and inspiring book that will help you uncover and break the so-called rules that could be holding you back from a life of awesome. Get it here! ] “I do have dreams, but I try to keep them realistic.” No one likes to admit they don’t have dreams. But no one likes to be called a fool, either. Or worse yet, a failure. After all, the bigger you dream, the more likely you are to fail. Claiming to have realistic dreams makes you sound smart. It gives the impression that you’re going places, likely to …

Saturday Morning Sprinkles: Urban Treehouse Edition
• Italian architect Luciano Pia designed an apartment complex in Turin that makes residents feel like they live in a giant urban tree-house. More, please. • If you're not clear about what you want out of life, life will just happen to you. A great little post by my friend Scott and how his unconventional decision at a job fair years ago completely changed his life. • These colorful art installations made with candy are pretty darn neat. • Graffiti gone awesome: An anonymous artist adds Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner to the Acme Foundry Company in Minneapolis. Finally, some …

This Week In Rule Breaking
Rules that don't exist are all around us, and they can keep us from living a life of awesome. Some are rules we've uncovered, others have been shared with us from people like you. Follow along on Instagram, Tumblr, or Facebook or share your own rule here! Gina Goodbred submitted this one. Mixing holidays really makes Adultitis uneasy. Good. My son will choose french fries over ice cream. Every. Single. Day. He …
Read the First Three Chapters of Penguins Can’t Fly for Free
The book doesn't officially come out until June 23rd, but you can read the first few chapters of Penguins Can't Fly +39 Other Rules That Don't Exist right now. For free. When we were kids, we were winning at life. But as we got older, Adultitis began to set in, and we got inundated with a bunch of rules that don't exist. Things like "act your age," "hide your wrinkles," and "hate Mondays." Following these so-called rules is a terrific way to stress you out, sap your energy, and ensure a boring life. But there’s a better way. This book, which is packed with pages of my full-color art, …

How to Make Spring Cleaning Way More Fun
Last week we hosted a live party over on Facebook to celebrate the end of winter. (Winter exacted her revenge by dumping several inches of snow on us a few days later, which obviously proves that Winter has Adultitis.) Anyway, it was a fun and frantic online hangout filled with laughter and lively discussion. One of the topics that came up was spring cleaning. Namely, how to make it more FUN. (Is it even possible?) You could try what my two-year-old son Ben did last year, which was to just throw everything out the window. Or you could try some of these gems, shared by some fellow Escape …

The Magical Moving Sidewalk
When do mechanical issues in Los Angeles wreak havoc on a flight from Nashville to Detroit? When you're trying to get home to Madison, of course. I recently had a speaking engagement in Nashville and took Lucy with me for our second Daddy Daughter business trip. Everything was wonderful, until our flight home, which was delayed thanks to the aforementioned issues in L.A. That caused us to miss our plane to Madison by mere minutes, despite us sprinting though the airport. As I spoke with an airline representative (the specific airline doesn't really matter, does it?) I struggled to …
Saturday Morning Sprinkles: The Most Amazing Table in the World Edition
• I've never wanted an inmate object more than I want this table. The balloons and strings are made from steel rods and metal resin composite, which makes it much sturdier than it appears. Looks like it's selling for £7,800 or something absurd, but somehow very reasonable considering how awesome this is. If I were super rich, this is how I would spend my money, people. • For some whimsy on a budget, here's an option: Google And Mattel Revive The View-Master. • I agree with this article that says kids are too overprotected. I also think the new take on playgrounds the article covers is on …

Some are rules we've uncovered, others have been shared with us from people like you. Follow along on Instagram, Tumblr, or Facebook or share your own rule here! Took this one on a warm pre-spring day in Madison, where students were enjoying the sunshine even though the lake was still stuck in winter mode... Once you reach a certain age, you're allowed to take liberties with …
