Family Dinners: In Praise of Good Parenting

Lately, Kim and I have felt that we've spent a lot of time ranting on bad parenting. A lot of that is attributed to our mission. Although it largely involves helping grown-ups tap into their childlike spirit to create lives that are less stressful and more fun, we also want to help children have good childhoods to look back on. However, anything we will ever be able to accomplish in this arena absolutely pales in comparison to the impact individual parents have in the lives of their own children. It's easy to point out the negative (it's been the bread and butter of the news media for a …

How You Live

Very few songs summarize our message as well as this one, "How You Live" by Point of Grace. I hope this song inspires you to drink milk from your wine glasses at dinner tonight. Lyrics... …

Halloween Happenings

Recently I shared about some Halloween plans that were being developed at Maze Lumber in IL. Jason's dad, Walt, had managed to come up with some ideas that were proving to be not only playful, but also profitable. Even though he decided to dress up as a mean lookin' nun, he sure exhibited some Adultitis-free behavior this Halloween. (Especially while riding his scooter around town!) I'm excited to share... Walt's "Top Ten" observations from the day. 10. The food was well received! (hot apple cider, apple cider donuts, with some other sweet additions) 9. Upon seeing the costumed …

Love Your Body, Love Your Life

(This is an excerpt of an article written for Kim & Jason magazine by Jill Fleming, MS, RD, a registered dietitian and amazing wellness speaker.) Do you love your body? I do now, but I didn’t always. Nineteen years ago, I went to college and gained 40 pounds in just 2 years. I had a very low self-image and made terrible lifestyle choices. I now refer to these lifestyle choices, such as eating junk food, inactivity, excess consumption of food or alcohol, sleep deprivation and chronic (uncontrolled) stress as “Crap Choices.” I made crap choices daily and I felt like crap! After earning …

The Truth is Out There

Chuck Westbrook has a blog called I Hate Your Job. While poking fun at cube life, it offers funny, irreverent, yet practical advice on how you can enjoy your job more (or find another one). He's 23-years-old. Does that make him too young to offer valuable advice to someone in the middle of their career? That's the question Rennie Sloan of Motto Magazine proposed. Here's an excerpt: …

Grandpa Me and Wii

I've always wondered what kind of old person I'd be. Should I be starting my collection of itchy sweaters now? Will I wear Velcro shoes? Will I smell funny? When I was a kid, many old people seemed grumpy and depressed, uninterested in life. I kind of thought that such a fate was inevitable. Of course, as I've gotten older, I've encountered many senior citizens who are very vibrant and full of life. I've happily discovered that an ever-increasing case of Adultitis is NOT an automatic part of aging. In most cases, grumpy old folks with Adultitis were probably at one time grumpy middle-aged …

Playful Profitability

As American schools rampantly work to take Halloween off the calendar, I am relieved and refreshed to hear about a few businesses embracing this fun holiday with open arms, using it as an opportunity to give their customers a fun experience. You may remember Jason's dad. We've highlighted him in the past for his example of playfulness and Adultitis-free living (you may also remember him from his high spirited contributions in the Escape Plan). Well, Walt strikes again! …

Are You On the Right Track?

Being on the road can be tough. The adventure is fun, but lots of little "stuff" can add up and wear you down. Stuff like lugging heavy suitcases and extra boxes filled with books through the airport...waiting an hour on the runway for some last-minute plane repair to be documented...taking your shoes off for the hundredth time while a uniformed official looks at you suspiciously...being in so many different hotels that you forget which numbered door your room key will open...and trying desperately to catch a few moments of sleep on a red eye flight in a seat that seems more like a sardine can …

Permission Mission

Jason, myself and the rest of us on this journey to rid the world of Adultitis fondly identify ourselves as having a "permission mission." Let's face it, life is not always a bed of roses. It's filled with many ups and downs, and our day-to-day can often be met with real stress that cannot be ignored. We are here to give you permission to interject a little fun every once in a while and to look at life through a new lens. Not too long ago we gave a program for a group of professionals for a staff appreciation day. We put some Play-Doh on the tables, along with crayons and paper for a …
