Life balance. What is it? Does it even exist? And if so, is it attainable?
Here’s an email we got from someone who was planning to attend one of our live programs. She outlined the elements of her life balance dilemma:
4 kids, no sleep, 2 businesses, juggling between work and little ones, and work and older ones, homework, sports and activities, oh yeah, the wife thing too. No time to tell you more detail, looking forward to meeting you.
Sound familiar? Perhaps you can relate. We hear this sort of thing all. the. time.
In the crazy, fast-paced, technology-driven, always “on” world in which we live, this issue is at the heart of everything. There is more change, more choice, and more demands than ever before. And there are more opportunities to be pulled in a million different directions. Maintaining a mindful and meaningful level of life balance is HUGE. And messing it up can wreak havoc with our careers, our health, and our relationships.
So the question remains: How do I create life balance?
First the bad news. There is no magic bullet. There is no one-size-fits all solution. If it were easy, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion. We’d all be frolicking in a field of gumdrops and lollipops. (Mmmm, gumdrops…)
But there is good news. Although it will look a bit different for everyone, achieving some semblance of life balance is possible. Very much so. You were not designed to live a life that leaves you stressed out, worn down, and constantly running on empty.
But it requires a desire to actually want it. As silly as it sounds, you’d be surprised at how many people say they want life balance but are unwilling to admit they have any control over the situation at all. They refuse to be honest with themselves, ask the tough questions, and make the important changes. Then life happens and they wake up one day realizing they missed the boat. Those are the ones on their death bed resting on a pillow filled with regrets.
Don’t let that be you.
Our entire life’s work is dedicated to helping people figure this life balance thing out. So yeah, thinking that we could boil it down into one snappy sound byte or a little blue pill is a bit of a stretch.
We don’t have all the answers — that’s your job — but we do know the questions to ask.
Most of what we do here is “preach what we practice.” We’re far from perfect, but we have uncovered some pretty profound truths over the years. Here’s a series of posts we’ve written to get you started on improving your own life balance. Hopefully they will challenge you, inspire you to think, and encourage you to create a life that is less stressful and more fun.
The action part, though, that’s up to you.
