On Darth Vader, Adultitis and Our Wedding Day

Last Friday, Jason and I celebrated 11 years of being Mr. & Mrs. In true "Escape Adulthood" fashion, we played hooky in the afternoon and enjoyed a beautiful spring day in Madison together -- just the two of us. Lunch outside by the lake, a nice stroll down State Street, dreaming together by the water. Our boss didn't even care!! :) It's fun to think back to our wedding day. There were so many amazing little moments that I like to savor. …

Fighting Adultitis with a Little Help From Our Friends

Fighting Adultitis is a tireless task. Although we try our darndest to create books, videos, and other cool stuff to help you turn the tide against this evil epidemic, we certainly can't do it alone. Fortunately, we have some super friends who also have made some neat Adultitis-fighting things. …

Small Rebellion #1: Project Pancake!

We're doing something new and a little nuts. We've been writing a lot lately about this idea of small rebellions, those small but mighty acts of defiance against the rules that don’t exist and the most effective way of defeating Adultitis. Over the past months, we've been sharing examples from people who've inspired us. And we've decided it's time to take things to a new level. To get even more people involved and mount a campaign that really puts Adultitis on the defensive. And so we're thrilled to announce our first-ever officially-sanctioned Small Rebellion. …

7 Ways to Defeat Adultitis Amidst Chronic Pain

One of our most frequently asked questions is this: "Living an Adultitis-free life is great in theory, but what about people who live with pain? How are you to stay young when health issues prevent you from enjoying life and having normal fun?" …

Mud is Too Dirty: Have You Become Your Parents?

Having kids does weird things to you. The gravity of being the one responsible for the care and development of another human being can be overwhelming. The role of responsible “grown-up” can make you terribly paranoid, overly strict, and endlessly stressed-out. …

A Drug Called Busyness

People often complain about how busy they are. And yet. After observing people in restaurants, airports, and elsewhere, I actually think some people crave busyness. It’s as if they self-induce busyness in order to feel better about themselves. More valued. More important. Maybe constantly being on the phone in public makes them feel like a big shot. Maybe busyness numbs them from some pain they don’t want to deal with. Maybe busyness serves as a convenient patsy for avoiding or postponing the hard and scary changes they need to make in their life. Taking the drug called …

5 Surefire Ways to Fight Adultitis While Flying

Looking for a surefire way to acquire a "Full-Blown" case of Adultitis? Two words: air travel The experience of flying is guaranteed to morph even the most "glass half full" type of person into a cynical scrooge - or your money back. (Ha!) Who knew a hefty case of Adultitis was free with the price of a plane ticket? And being the contagious disease that it is, it's quite tricky to escape the spread when you're quarantined in small planes and stuffy airports. …

Why Adultitis is China’s Biggest Problem

I hear a lot about how China is going to take over the world. That the days of America as world superpower are almost over. China certainly has some good things going for it, but it also has its share of challenges, like the caring and feeding of a population of 1.3 billion people, staggering air and water pollution, and oh yeah, the whole communism thing. I'd submit that their biggest obstacle of all is their Adultitis-ridden viewpoint on fun. In watching the coverage of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, I got the impression that they take themselves WAY too seriously. And consider …

How to Avoid the Dark Side of Metamorphosis

Have you ever gone through a major metamorphosis? Are you in the middle of one right now? Metamorphosis was the "word of the week" on Sesame Street this week. [Side note: I love how Sesame Street talks UP to kids, challenging them to not only say a five syllable word, but also to understand the meaning. Very cool!] As Elmo explained to Abby in his screechy, glass-shattering voice, "It's a B--I--G change!" Tadpoles transforming into frogs and caterpillars turning into a butterflies were given as examples. As I heard this theme echoed over and over throughout the episode, I couldn't …

The Danger of Cartwheels and Car Dancing

It wasn't long after she learned to walk that Lucy started dancing. It began with little head bobs and knee bends. Now, when a fast beat is bursting from our living room stereo, Lucy is the first one to come running. Spinning, twirling, and bouncing, she's a whirling dervish of dance moves. I hate it that we lose that free-spiritedness as we get older. Most of us, anyway. Me included. …
